Will Xabi Alonso be sacked by Real Madrid after Spanish Super Cup final defeat?
The Spanish giants experienced a narrow 2-3 loss against Barcelona in an intense final held in Saudi Arabia yesterday. Raphinha gave Barcelona an early lead, but a spectacular individual goal from Vinicius Jr. brought Real Madrid back into the game.
Although Robert Lewandowski scored and young talent Gonzalo Garcia netted a late goal to maintain the pressure, Raphinha’s second decisive strike ultimately handed the trophy to the Catalan side. This defeat marks the second year in a row that "Los Blancos" have fallen to their primary rivals in this specific competition.
Following the final whistle, various Spanish news organizations began to speculate about Alonso’s job security. Numerous commentators questioned whether the 44-year-old manager could survive at the Bernabéu after failing to secure a title against their biggest enemy.
These doubts were amplified by recent rumors suggesting that Alonso was losing his grip on the locker room, with reports highlighting potential friction between the coach and several stars, including Vinicius Jr.
Nevertheless, Defensa Central has provided a contrasting update on the situation. While departing the King Abdullah Sports City stadium last night, President Perez was questioned regarding the future of the head coach.
Perez dismissed any uncertainty, confirming that Alonso retains his full trust. The president reportedly told high-ranking club officials, “Alonso is going to stay and he’s going to help us win titles.”
Furthermore, respected journalist Jose Felix Diaz reported in AS that the internal view of the club is more positive than the media suggests. He pointed out that Real Madrid’s performance in Jeddah showed significant grit and tactical improvement.
Compared to the more defensive approach under Carlo Ancelotti last year, Alonso’s squad remained competitive and dangerous until the end. Diaz noted that "the Super Cup and Real Madrid’s performance in it keep Xabi Alonso’s job alive," adding that the leadership prefers to analyze current squad issues rather than appoint a new manager.
Despite missing out on the Super Cup trophy, Real Madrid’s season is far from over. The club remains in contention for a prestigious "treble," with the Champions League, La Liga, and the Copa del Rey still within reach.
Just 3 days after the final, the team will return to Spain for a trip to Albacete. This fixture marks their debut in this season's Copa del Rey, offering an immediate chance for Alonso to regain momentum and silence his detractors.
